And there are yet more twists in the long-running attempts to develop 18 Fairview Avenue. In June 2009 Abbey Building Contractors
lodged a new application for 20 independent living units, to accommodate 51 residents “Ref. No. 3196/09″.

This is the third attempt by Abbey to overdevelop this site.
In 2008 the developer received planning permission (with 15 conditions) from Dublin City Council for a similar proposal ”Ref. No. 5735/07″ for this site, despite heavy opposition from residents. Fairview Residents’ Association appealed this decision to An Bord Pleanála and succeeded in stopping the over-development.
Abbey then changed its plans for the site and applied to build an 80-bed nursing home “Ref. No. 4544/08
“. Again, despite many objections, planning permission was granted by Dublin City Council last April. Following an EGM to discuss the proposals it was generally felt that the scale of proposed development was too large for the site and that the design was considered to be out of character with the surrounding area. The F.R.A. lodged an appeal against the decision to An Bord Pleanála. This appeal also succeeded.
The F.R.A. objected to the new application for independent living units to Dublin City Council, but - rather unbelievably - DCC approved the application; this time with 17 conditions.
The FRA have again appealed this decision to An Bord Pleanála on 10 December 2009.
