In a new twist in the long-running attempts to develop 18 Fairview Avenue, Abbey Building Contractors have lodged a new application for 20 independent living units, to accommodate 51 residents “Ref. No. 3196/09″.

Last year, the developer received planning permission for a similar proposal ”Ref. No. 5735/07″ for this site, despite heavy opposition from residents. Abbey then changed its plans for the site and applied to build an 80-bed nursing home “Ref. No. 4544/08“. Again, despite many objections, planning permission was granted by Dublin City Council last April.
In response, Fairview Residents Association hosted an EGM to discuss the proposals. The well attended meeting featured a presentation from the site developers, followed by a lively question and answer session.
While residents were not opposed to the idea of a nursing home on the site, it was generally felt that the scale of proposed development was too large for the site. In addition, the design was considered to be out of character with the surrounding area. It was also felt that the development would cause serious traffic and
parking problems in the area.
After a unanimous vote, the F.R.A. lodged an appeal against the decision. A number of residents have also lodged their own individual appeals, so approximately 10 appeals were made to An Bord Pleanála. These appeals are currently under consideration by the Bord.
The F.R.A. will also be objecting to the new application for independent living units.
If you want to lodge your own objection, the latest date for submissions is 13Â July, 2009.
